What font should I choose for literature study my thesis? This post is by past final, DrJanene Carey, a freelance writer and editor based in literature study Armidale NSW. She occasionally teaches academic writing at the University of New England and often edits academic theses, articles and reports. Writing Letter In German! Her website is http://www.janenecarey.com. Arguably, this question is literature, a classic time waster and the student who poses it should be told to just get on with writing up their research. Topics! But as someone who edits theses for a living, I think a bit of literature, time spent on application letter fonts is part of the process of study, buffing and polishing what is, after all, one of the most important documents you will ever produce. Health Essays! Just bear in literature study mind that there is no need to topics immerse yourself so deeply in literature the topic that you start quibbling about clinical nursing practice, whether it’s a font or a typeface that you are choosing. Times New Roman is the literature, standard choice for academic documents, and the thesis preparation guidelines of some universities stipulate its use.

For many years, it was the default body text for essay questions brown Microsoft Word. With the literature, release of Office 2007, the nursing practice, default became a sans serif typeface called Calibri. Study! Lacking the writing letter in german, little projecting bits (serifs) at the end of literature study, characters makes Calibri and its many friends, such as Arial, Helvetica and Verdana, look smoother and clearer on a screen, but generally makes them less readable than a serif typeface when used for printed text. The other problem with choosing a sans serif for your body text is that if you want passages in essay questions about italics (for example, lengthy participant quotes) often this will be displayed as slanted letters, rather than as a true italic font. You would like your examiners to feel as comfortable as possible while their eyes are traversing the study, many, many pages of essay in english topics, your thesis, so maximising legibility and readability is a good idea. Times New Roman is ubiquitous and familiar, which means it is literature study, probably the safest option, but it does have a couple of drawbacks. In English Topics! Originally designed for literature The Times in on military London, its characters are slightly narrowed, so that more of them can be squished into a newspaper column. Literature Study! Secondly, some people intensely dislike TNR because they think it has been overused, and about brown of education regard it as the literature study, font you choose when you are not choosing a font. If you do have the health essays, luxury of study, choice (your university doesn’t insist you use Times New Roman, and you have defined document styles that are easy to modify, and there’s enough time left before the clinical, submission deadline) then I think it is worth considering what other typefaces might work well with your thesis. I’m not a typographical expert, but I have the following suggestions. Don’t use Calibri, or any other sans serif font, for your body text, though it is literature, fine for headings.

Most people agree that dense chunks of printed text are easier to read if the font is serif, and examiners are likely to expect a typeface that doesn’t stray too far from the standard. To my eye, Calibri looks a little too casual for the body of in english topics, a thesis. Typefaces like Garamond, Palatino, Century Schoolbook, Georgia, Minion Pro, Cambria and literature Constantia are all perfectly acceptable, and they come with Microsoft Word. However, some of them (Georgia and in english on various topics Constantia, for example) feature non-lining numerals, which means that instead of all sitting neatly on the base line, some will stand higher or lower than others, just like letters do. Study! This looks nice when they are integrated with the text, but it is health essays, probably not what you want for a tabular display. Consider using a different typeface for your headings. It will make them more prominent, which enhances overall readability because the eye scanning the pages can quickly take in the hierarchy of ideas. The easiest way to get a good contrast with your serif body text is to have sans serif headings. Popular combinations are Garamond/Helvetica; Minion Pro/Myriad Pro; Times New Roman/Arial Narrow.

But don’t create a dog’s breakfast by having more than two typefaces in your thesis – use point sizes, bold and italics for study variety. Of late, I’ve become quite fond of Constantia. It’s an attractive serif typeface that came out with Office 2007 at a job the same time as Calibri, and was specifically designed to literature look good in print and on screen. Increasingly, theses will be read in PDF rather than book format, so screen readability is an important consideration. Asked to review Microsoft’s six new ClearType fonts prior to their release, typographer Raph Levien said Constantia was likely to be everyone’s favourite, because ‘Even though it’s a highly readable Roman font departing only slightly from the classical model, it still manages to health essays be fresh and new.’ By default, Constantia has non-lining numerals, but from Word 2010 onwards you can set them to be lining via the advanced font/number forms option, either throughout your document or in specific sections, such as within tables.

Here is an excerpt from a thesis, shown twice with different typefaces. The first excerpt features Calibri headings with Constantia body text, and the second has that old favourite, Times New Roman. As these examples have been rendered as screenshots, you will get a better idea of how the fonts actually look if you try them on literature your own computer and printer. Times New Roman. I fully agree that spending some time to consider how we want our publications to look is important (when we have that level of health essays, control, such as in a Thesis or Dissertation). Attractive layout and easy-to-read print will help the Reader engage with the literature study, text.

However, KISS (keep it simple, stupid) is perhaps our greatest friend here; we over-embellish at our peril. Lastly, if Word’s styles (or LaTeX’s if we are so inclined) are set up properly, then amending an entire document is quite straightforward and needn’t cause much stress for the writer. Oh, and I agree in relation to setting up of styles. Haven’t used Constantia but have just submitted my thesis using Calibri. I certainly don’t see it as too casual.

That would be Comic Sans or similar. I see it as peaceful and calm. I wonder whether the application letter, font affects assessors unduly? If so, is there a difference in impact linked with academic discipline. Thanks for these great suggestions. Just one minor correction: Minion Pro and Myriad Pro are not included in MS Office.

They are bundled with Adobe software. Thanks, yes, you are right. I do have them in some Office 2010 Word documents I created some time ago, but now I am on Office 2013 I see they are not available. Perhaps even with my older versions of Word I got Minion and Myriad Pro because I had some Adobe program. They are actually included in MS office 2016 for Mac 2016 #128578; Times New Roman has a complete range for mathematical symbols and is best for literature study studies containing mathematical equations. Very good point! Although it covers the 2200-22ff block, Times New Roman doesn’t have anywhere near a complete range for mathematical symbols. In particular, it comes up very short for arrow symbols. Some fonts don’t have the required character sets (or at in english topics least, there are only cut-down versions of those sets included in MSOffice) and so not all the diacritics are available.

My university’s template is based on Garamond for body text but I have changed to Palatino in literature order to write one (prominent) author’s name correctly with a diacritic over health essays, the Z. Literature! The alternative was to have every instance of the author’s name in TNR in the middle of Garamond text (no way!), or to omit the diacritic, which is effectively spelling it incorrectly. One of the many things in which Zizek ruins everything #128539; Janene was my thesis editor – fabulous advice! If you are writing up – Janene is a wealth of support for ensuring that the finished thesis will look and read beautifully…. Great to see her advice in this blog.. #128578; Given my experience in printing and setting type, I’d agree with many of the comments here, especially about writing application in german, Times Roman! I chose Bookman Old Style, which has a large x-height and study is designed for a job application letter children’s books.

Anything that makes it easier for the examiners. Remember that readability is different to legibility! #128578; My readability vs legibility link is broken – a pity as it explained the literature study, distinction nicely – will try to find another and ask Inger to update it. This is past final term, a love letter to Caslon, but also clearly defines legibility and readability, in a way that doesn’t imply readability is study, only about having an appealing document layout while legibility only relates to ease of character recognition … Full agreed Dr John. Here in India, Bookman Old Style is a preference, though some universities still insist TNR. It has become a ‘convention’ to just go by term papers of sta630, the default font in literature study Word Processors. Janene’s post enlightens on font selection, which is past final of sta630, crucial to ensure readability and literature legibility. Clinical Practice! It’s just about literature, ‘nuances’ #128578;

I am considering Sitka Heading or Sitka Subheading. Does anyone have any views on these fonts? A thought provoking post, but… what is the evidence for readability in fonts, other than “most people agree?” Certainly in people with language or visual problems, sans serif have been shown to be more readable in a couple of small studies (http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/1460-6984.12206, https://www.islandscholar.ca/fedora/repository/ir%3A13069). It’s not my area, so I don’t know if there is a systematic review of these issues somewhere?

Personally, I would much prefer sans serif in long texts (though Contantia looks great, thanks!), but this demonstrates the subjectiveness of the matter. A thought provoking post, but… what is the bearing, evidence for readability in literature fonts, other than “most people agree?” Certainly in about brown v. board people with language or visual problems, sans serif have been shown to be more readable in a couple of small studies. It’s not my area, so I don’t know if there is a systematic review of literature, these issues somewhere? Personally, I would much prefer sans serif in long texts (though Contantia looks great, thanks!), but this demonstrates the subjectiveness of the health essays, matter. I’m a very big fan of Baskerville. I remember reading a paper on font choice a few years back, which argued there was a correlation between serif fonts and higher marks. Gave Baskerville a whirl, and sure enough, good marks. #128578; Thanks for this post, Janene. I think every PhD student goes through the font-procrastination phase, but for me this was an important moment of – as you say – polishing, and also of valuing the look and feel of my thesis document. I wrote about my font choice of Garamond here – https://theeduflaneuse.wordpress.com/2016/03/31/bound-phd-thesis/ – as well as my choice of paper for the final bound copies.

For me Garamond was a more beautiful serif option than the literature study, ubiquitous and squishy TNR. It also made sense for the narrative approach of clinical practice, my thesis, as it was reminiscent of literature study, storybooks. It’s lovely that you took so much care. Thank you, Janene. Writing Application Letter In German! I don’t expect everyone would be as book- and literature study font- obsessed as me, but it helped me connect with my text and feel ownership over the look and feel of the final product. I started pondering then figured I should probably look at the university policies. Alas, I’m restricted to the following: “7.2 Formatting should be: line spacing 1.5, Times New Roman or Arial 12 pt font, all four margins 20mm, A4 size. In that case, I’d choose TNR. Writing A Job Letter In German! I’d hope the binding margin could be more than 2 cm, though. There is some good advice here, but also a few prejudices receiving confirmation.

To begin with, “Most people agree that dense chunks of printed text are easier to read if the literature, font is serif”. No one has been able to demonstrate a definitive relation between reading speeds and serifs – in general. In principle it is an aesthetic question, but of course we don’t approach this question unbiased. My private theory is that the omnipresence of sans serif body texts in past term papers many (dull) academic textbooks, has prejudiced us against literature, their use. It isn’t that serifs are easier to read, it’s just that we approach sans serif texts from a more negative angle to health essays begin with. One needs to be practical, however. Most academics in my experience have a conservative attitude to literature type (this post is a good example), so why irritate them by setting your thesis in Comic Sans? There is a typographer’s motto which says that when the typography is the first thing that you think about (be it negative *or* positive) when opening a book, you’ve done something wrong. It should support the text, be subservient to it, not jump out. Because when reading texts, type is far less important than *typography*, and final term of sta630 the choice for serif or sans serif in general is less important than the choice for literature a *good* serif or sans serif font.

Something like Fira Sans will always be a better choice than Bookman because it is a better designed and more versatile font – but you could easily defend serifs with two different choices. Final! Also, adapt your layout (if you have that option) to the type you’ve chosen. If you insist on literature using Bookman, make sure to use enough whitespace so it doesn’t end up as a nightmare of questions v. board, mingling strokes. But most importantly: suit your typeface to the task it is supposed to study perform. Constantia is a fine choice in principle, but not so much if you have a lot of alternating italic and regular text, because the contrast between regular and italic is insufficient in that case. And it’s OK to alternate serifs for headers and sans serif for a job letter text, so long as your text contains longish passages of body text. Study! If you have a new header (or several) on each page, you may want to used variations (Bold, caps, etc.) of the same typeface throughout your text to bring some peace to the page.

I used Segoe UI because of health essays, its good legibility on screen and in print. Has anyone else used it? Note that you used a sans serif font for this post #128578; Please explain. This is literature study, not my website and health essays I do not have any control over the font used here. It is probably whatever came with the literature, particular WordPress theme Inger chose when she first began the Thesis Whisperer site. Furthermore, the post is on a website, not on a printed page.

San serif is very commonly used for text display on past term papers screens due to the fact that screens have much lower resolution than print. Literature! Lower resolution means the little serifs are less clear, making the past final term papers, font less legible. Had hoped for humourous response. Study! But since we are being serious, any printed book or ebook you pick up is always in a sans serif font. As far as legibility is clinical, concerned, in the days before typewritten school/ uni assignments were submitted in handwriting, I was always instructed to submit in printed form, ergo, sans serif, not in ‘running writing’. Literature! The font question needs to be resolved by the examining institutions whom should stipulate their preferred font and negate this confusion for students. yep, I take full responsibility for the fonts here! Thanks for this article – the timing is perfect for me as I am writing my 5th chapter and realised too late that I should have had a set template before I started writing!

I like the essay in english on various topics, suggestion re Constantia and have just started using it, including adjusting the numerals to study be lining (thank you Google). Health Essays! I am now cobbling together my style template but would really welcome suggestions for a MS Word template for a humanities PhD thesis that actually looks clean and has all the functionality needed. I find there are some templates with the functionality (albeit science-based, but I can alter them) but they look very busy. Grateful for study some advice. If you’ve already started cobbling, I would go with what you have. Essay! You can keep it quite simple, just defining Heading 1, 2, 3 and study maybe 4, a paragraph style, a style for indented quotes, a reference style. If you are comfortable with section breaks, headers and footers, setting up the essay about v. board of education, front matter with the page numbers appearing correctly is not difficult. Study! Different universities often stipulate a different ordering for the front matter, so it may have to be tweaked anyway. The Table of Contents and Lists of Figures and Tables can all be automatically generated by on various topics, Word.

I am still 18 months away from submission but this is a question that has crossed my mind more than once. I am glad to realise I am not the literature, only one who spends time deliberating these things and whilst to some extent it can be seen as procrastination it is important to remember that examiners are only human and whatever I can do to make the reading of papers of sta630, my thesis more enjoyable surely has to be a good thing right? I think that’s the literature, thesis of health essays, my original post! Thank you for the great information on dissertation fonts. Study! At least I am now knowledgeable due to information provided in this article. We provide dissertation writing help at a job letter in german http://www.cutewriters.com/finest-quality-phd-dissertation-writing-service-uk-usa/. I prefer using Times New Roman and font size 12 for all academic papers. I struck a new and unexpected problem late yesterday when converting my thesis Word document into a PDF – font rendering in PDFs. Literature! For context, my uni requires thesis to essays on military be uploaded as PDFs, they are not printed and bound. My thesis was in Word, and used Times New Roman font. Literature Study! However any text in bold italics rendered very differently depending on how I created the PDF, i.e. save as PDF, expert to PDF, print to PDF using CutePDF, print to PDF using Microsoft print to PDF, or another converter.

A related problems is that fonts are not embedded in PDFs, they are embedded in the pdf reader. If you choose a font that is proprietary or not widely available, a PDF reader will substitute with another font. So you beautifully prepared thesis may not look the nursing, same depending on the PDF reader!! I’m now wondering if this is the reason a few uni’s limit font choices to Arial and literature Times New Roman… I think that to avoid this problem, you should embed the fonts used in your document first. Within Word, choose File/Options/Save and tick ‘Embed Fonts in the File’. Alternatively, when you do Save As in Word 2013 there is a Tools button next to the Save button that lets you access the clinical, same menu. This makes your document’s file size much larger but it is a good thing to do just before creating your PDF.

Also when you Export to PDF, tick the PDF/A compliance box because that embeds the literature, fonts in the PDF. Thank for this great post! I was wondering if you could advise me please. In English Topics! I have written up my thesis in Calibri and literature I’m now hoping to past final papers change the font of the main text. Literature! I however cannot change the font of diagrams and essay in english on various topics tables, as there are quite a few and I’ve already formatted them to fit.

So I was wondering, would it be OK if my main text was say in Garamond and the headings, tables and figures were in Calibri? I actually like Calibri in tables. I think it looks crisp and clean and you can set it at a slightly smaller size than the literature study, main text (11 or 10 pt) and health essays it remains legible. I am about to finish my thesis and my font is Cambria for both heading and body with size 12. I have to submit a hard copy so do you think it would look good ? I use Cambria. It’s smooth and stylish without sticking out. And it fits neatly with math symbols and formulas. Thank you for this – really helpful. I’m going with Constantia for main text. I thought I would go with Arial for headings: bold anf larger in main headings and literature italic in subheadings. But as someone who saw my draft pointed out the subheadings don’t look so good because Arial doesn’t have a real italic but an health essays oblique.

What’s your opinion on this? I’ve been looking for literature a sans serif with real italics. About Brown! Calibri has it but I’m not cracy about Calibri. In this blog post, I’m going to final papers, share with you how to create an literature argumentative essay outline. Clinical Nursing. At the end, I’ll give you a downloadable skeleton outline you can use to get started. Structure of the Argumentative Essay Outline.

That’s not so bad! There’s really nothing to be afraid of. Here’s how your argumentative essay outline would look if you turned it into a pretty picture: Each of these four sections requires some important elements. Let’s break those down now. Argumentative Essay Outline Section 1: Your Intro. Study. Your introduction is past final, where you lay the foundation for your impenetrable argument. It’s made up of a hook, background information, and a thesis statement. 1. Hook. Your first sentence is comprised of a “hook.” Don’t know what a hook is?

A hook is literature, a sentence that grabs your reader’s attention just like a good Jackie Chan movie grabs the attention of clinical, a martial arts fan. Let’s say I’m writing an argumentative essay about why American people should start eating insects. My hook could be, “For those interested in improving their diets and the environment, say ‘goodbye’ to eating chicken, fish, and beef and ‘hello’ to eating silk worms, crickets, and caterpillars.” If you’re having trouble coming up with a good hook, I recommend reading my blog post How to Write Good Hook Sentences. 2. Background information. The next part of study, your intro is dedicated to offering some detailed background information on your topic. Try answering the following questions: What is the issue at health essays, hand? Who cares?

Where is this issue prevalent? Why is it important? For example, “Insects are abundant, nutritious, and environmentally sustainable. Currently, people in the United States shun the idea of literature, eating insects as part of their diets, favoring instead less nutritious and environmentally destructive food options, such as beef and pork. The UN recently issued a statement calling for nursing more world citizens to literature, embrace the many benefits of eating insects.” 3. Health Essays. Thesis. Study. Your thesis typically makes up the last sentence of your intro paragraph. Nursing Practice. This is study, where you clearly state your position on the topic and on military bearing give a reason for your stance. Study. For example, “A diet of insects can help fix problems related to health essays, starvation, obesity, and climate change, and therefore, United States citizens should learn to rely on a variety of insects over chicken, beef, and fish as their main source of protein and nutrition.” Notice the literature study word “should” in my thesis statement? Using this word makes it clear I’m taking a stance on the argument.

You’ll also notice that my thesis statement sets up the three claims I’m going to on military bearing, expand on literature, later: a diet of insects can help fix problems related to questions v. board, starvation, obesity, and literature study climate change. Let’s talk about adding those claims to our argumentative essay outline now. Argumentative Essay Outline Section 2: Developing Your Argument. Now that you have filled in the general points of your topic and a job letter in german outlined your stance in the introduction, it’s time to literature, develop your argument. In my sample outline, I show three claims, each backed by three points of evidence. Clinical. Offering three claims is just a suggestion; you may find that you only have two claims to make, or four. The exact number of claims you choose to include doesn’t matter (unless, of course, your teacher has given you a specific requirement).

What matters is that you develop your argument as thoroughly as possible. 1. What is a claim? A claim is a statement you make to literature, support your argument. For example, “Bugs are highly nutritious and eating them can fix the problem of essay brown v. board of education, hunger and malnutrition in the United States.” Great! So I’ve made my claim. But who’s going to believe me? This is literature study, where evidence comes into play. Health Essays. 2. What is evidence? For each claim you make, you need to provide supporting evidence. Evidence is factual information from reliable sources.

It is literature study, not personal knowledge or anecdotal. For example, “Researchers at the Food and clinical nursing practice Agricultural Organization of the United States state that ‘Termites are rich in study, protein, fatty acids, and writing application letter in german other micronutrients. Fried or dried termites contain 32–38 percent proteins.’“ My outline shows three pieces of evidence to support each claim, but you may find that each claim doesn’t necessarily have three pieces of evidence to back it. Once again, the study exact number doesn’t necessarily matter (unless your teacher has given you instructions), but you need enough evidence to make your claim believable. Once you have gathered your evidence to support your claims, it’s time to add the essay in english next important element of your argumentative essay outline: refuting your opponents’ arguments. Let’s talk about that now. Argumentative Essay Outline Section 3: Refuting Opponents’ Arguments. In this section, you state your opponents’ views and then offer a rebuttal.

For example, “Opponents of insect eating from the Beef Council of America say that it is too difficult and time consuming to catch crickets, so it is not easy to study, gather enough food for a meal, whereas a cow is large and contains a lot of health essays, meat for many meals.” Oh diss! We know the Beef Council just wants us to keep eating McD’s hamburgers and skip the cricket soup. (By the way—I just made that up. The Beef Council did not say that. In your essay, make sure to use real facts.) Now it’s time to set the opponents straight with a refutation that is full of hard evidence and that will bring them to study, their knees. For example, “According to researchers Cerritos and Cano-Santana, the essays on military best time to harvest crickets is to catch them in the hour just before sunrise when they are least active. What’s more, it is easy to develop the literature study infrastructure to farm crickets in a way that is health essays, more sustainable than cattle farming.” Booyah! The Beef Council has been served (crickets).

Once you have refuted your opponents’ viewpoints, it’s time to sail to the finish line with your conclusion. Argumentative Essay Outline Section 4: Conclusion. In your conclusion, you are going to accomplish two important tasks. 1. Restate the importance of your issue. Similar to what you did in your introduction, you want to restate why this topic is critical.

For example, “Simply by incorporating insects into their diets, U.S. citizens can improve the sustainability and nutrition of the American diet.” 2. Paint a picture of the literature study world if your argument is (or is not) implemented. In the health essays final part of your conclusion, make your audience think about the ramifications of your argument. What would happen if people started eating insects as a staple of their diets? For example, “The world would be a better place if more people ate insects as a part of study, their diets. Fewer people would go hungry, more people would get the clinical practice vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients they need to live healthy lifestyles, and our planet would be relieved of the study burden of an unsustainable food system. Closing with a clear picture of the world as you would like it to be can leave your reader convinced that your argument is valid. essay on literature, chuck berry Chuck Berry is the brown greatest of the rock and rollers. Elvis competes with Frank Sinatra, Little Richard camps his way to study self-negation, Fats Domino looks old, and Jerry Lee Lewis looks down his noble honker at health essays, all those who refuse to understand that Jerry Lee has chosen to become a great country singer. But for a fee--which went up markedly after the literature study freak success of My Ding-a-Ling, his first certified million-seller, in 1972, and has now diminished again--Chuck Berry will hop on a plane with his guitar and go play some rock and roll. He is the symbol of the music--the first man elected to a Rock Music Hall of Fame that exists thus far only in the projections of health essays, television profiteers; the man invited to come steal the show at study, the 1975 Grammys, although he has never been nominated for one himself, not even in the rock and roll or rhythm and blues categories. More important, he is also the music's substance--he taught George Harrison and health essays Keith Richard to play guitar long before he met either, and his songs are still claimed as encores by everyone from folkies to heavy-metal kids.

But Chuck Berry isn't merely the literature study greatest of the rock and rollers, or rather, there's nothing mere about it. Say rather that unless we can somehow recycle the concept of the great artist so that it supports Chuck Berry as well as it does Marcel Proust, we might as well trash it altogether. As with Charlie Chaplin or Walt Kelly or the Beatles, Chuck Berry's greatness doesn't depend entirely on the greatness or originality of his oeuvre. The body of his top-quality work isn't exactly vast, comprising three or perhaps four dozen songs that synthesize two related traditions: blues, and country and essay questions about brown western. Literature! Although in some respects Berry's rock and roll is simpler and more vulgar than either of its musical sources, its simplicity and vulgarity are defensible in the snootiest high-art terms--how about instinctive minimalism or demotic voice? But his case doesn't rest on such defenses. It would be as perverse to argue that his songs are in themselves as rich as, say, Remembrance of Things Past . Their richness is bearing, rather a function of their active relationship with an audience--a complex relationship that shifts every time a song enters a new context, club or album or radio or mass singalong. Where Proust wrote about a dying subculture from a cork-lined room, Berry helped give life to a subculture, and literature study both he and essay in english topics it change every time they confront each other. Even My Ding-a-Ling, a fourth-grade wee-wee joke that used to mortify true believers at college concerts, permitted a lot of 12-year-olds new insight into study, the moribund concept of dirty when it hit the health essays airwaves; the song changed again when an oldies crowd became as children to study shout along with Uncle Chuck the night he received his gold record at Madison Square Garden.

And what happened to Brown Eyed Handsome Man, never a hit among whites, when Berry sang it at interracial rock and roll concerts in essay questions about brown of education, Northern cities in the Fifties? How many black kids took eyed as code for skinned? How many whites? How did that make them feel about study, each other, and about the song? And did any of past final term papers of sta630, that change the song itself? Berry's own intentions, of course, remain a mystery. Study! Typically, this public artist is an obsessively private person who has been known to drive reporters from his own amusement park, and the sketches of his life overlap and essay on various topics contradict each other.

The way I tell it, Berry was born into literature, a lower middle-class colored family in St. Past Term Of Sta630! Louis in 1926. He was so quick and ambitious that he both served time in literature study, reform school on a robbery conviction and acquired a degree in hairdressing and clinical nursing practice cosmetology before taking a job on an auto assembly line to support a wife and kids. Yet his speed and ambition persisted. By 1953 he was working as a beautician and study leading a three-piece blues group on past final term papers, a regular weekend gig. His gimmick was to cut the blues with country-influenced humorous narrative songs. These were rare in the black music of the time, although they had been common enough before phonograph records crystallized the blues form, and although Louis Jordan, a hero of Berry's, had been doing something vaguely similar in front of white audiences for years.

In 1955, Berry recorded two of his songs on a borrowed machine--Wee Wee Hours, a blues that he and his pianist, Johnnie Johnson, hoped to sell, and an adapted country tune called Ida Red. He traveled to study Chicago and met Muddy Waters, the uncle of the blues, who sent him on to Leonard Chess of Chess Records. Chess liked Wee Wee Hours but flipped for Ida Red, which was renamed Maybellene, a hairdresser's dream, and writing a job application in german forwarded to Allan Freed. Having mysteriously acquired one-third of the writer's credit with another DJ, Freed played Maybellene quite a lot, and it became one of the first nationwide rock 'n' roll hits. At that time, any fair-minded person would have judged this process exploitative and pecuniary. A blues musician comes to a blues label to promote a blues song--It was `Wee Wee Hours' we was proud of, that was our music, says Johnnie Johnson--but the literature study owner of the bearing label decides he wants to push a novelty: The big beat, cars, and young love.

It was a trend and we jumped on literature study, it, Chess has said. The owner then trades away a third of the blues singer's creative sweat to the symbol of payola, who hypes the novelty song into commercial success and leaves the health essays artist in a quandry. Does he stick with his art, thus forgoing the first real recognition he's ever had, or does he pander to popular taste? The question is study, loaded, of course. Ida Red was Chuck Berry's music as much as Wee Wee Hours, which in essays on military bearing, retrospect seems rather uninspired. In fact, maybe the integrity problem went the other way. Maybe Johnson was afraid that the innovations of literature, Ida Red--country guitar lines adapted to blues-style picking, with the of sta630 ceaseless legato of his own piano adding rhythmic excitement to the steady backbeat--were too far out to sell. What happened instead was that Berry's limited but brilliant vocabulary of guitar riffs quickly came to epitomize rock 'n' roll. Ultimately, every great white guitar group of the early Sixties imitated Berry's style, and Johnson's piano technique was almost as influential.

In other words, it turned out that Berry and Johnson weren't basically bluesmen at all. Through some magic combination of literature study, inspiration and cultural destiny, they had hit upon something more contemporary than blues, and a young audience, for nursing whom the literature study Depression was one more thing that bugged their parents, understood this better than the musicians themselves. Health Essays! Leonard Chess simply functioned as a music businessman should, though only rarely does one combine the courage and literature study insight (and opportunity) to pull it off, even once. Chess became a surrogate audience, picking up on new music and making sure that it received enough exposure for nursing practice everyone else to literature pick up on v. board of education, it, too. Obviously, Chuck Berry wasn't racked with doubt about artistic compromise. A good blues single usually sold around 10,000 copies and literature study a big rhythm and blues hit might go into the hundreds of final term papers of sta630, thousands, but Maybellene probably moved a million, even if Chess never sponsored the audit to prove it. Berry had achieved a grip on study, the white audience and the solid future it could promise, and, remarkably, he had in letter in german, no way diluted his genius to study do it. On the contrary, that was his genius. Writing A Job! He would never have fulfilled himself if he hadn't explored his relationship to the white world--a relationship which was much different for him, an urban black man who was used to machines and had never known brutal poverty, than it was for, say, Muddy Waters. Berry was the first blues-based performer to successfully reclaim guitar tricks that country and literature study western innovators had appropriated from black people and adapted to their own uses 25 or 50 years before. By adding blues tone to health essays some fast country runs, and yoking them to a rhythm and blues beat and some unembarrassed electrification, he created an instrumental style with biracial appeal.

Alternating guitar chords augmented the beat while Berry sang in an insouciant tenor that, while recognizably Afro-American in accent, stayed clear of the melisma and blurred overtones of blues singing, both of which enter only at carefully premeditated moments. Literature! His few detractors still complain about the repetitiveness of this style, but they miss the point. Repetition without tedium is the backbone of rock and roll, and the components of Berry's music proved so durable that they still provoke instant excitement at essay in english topics, concerts durable that they still provoke instant excitement at concerts two decades later. Literature! And in any case, the essay instrumental repetition was counterbalanced by unprecedented and study virtually unduplicated verbal variety. Chuck Berry is the greatest rock lyricist this side of Bob Dylan, and sometimes I prefer him to Dylan. Both communicate an abundance of the childlike delight in linguistic discovery that page poets are supposed to convey and too often don't, but Berry's most ambitious lyrics, unlike Dylan's, never seem pretentious or forced. True, his language is ersatz and health essays barbaric, full of literature, mispronounced foreignisms and advertising coinages, but then, so was Whitman's. Clinical Practice! Like Whitman, Berry is excessive because he is totally immersed in America--the America of Melville and literature study the Edsel, burlesque and installment-plan funerals, pemmican and final of sta630 pomade. Literature! Unlike Whitman, though, he doesn't quite permit you to take him seriously--he can't really think it's pronounced a la carty, can he?

He is a little surreal. Writing A Job! How else can a black man as sensitive as Chuck Berry respond to the affluence of white America--an affluence suddenly his for study the taking. Chuck Berry is not only a little surreal but also a little schizy; even after he committed himself to rock 'n' roll story songs, relegating the essay about bluesman in literature study, him to B sides and album fillers, he found his persona split in two. In three of the on military bearing four singles that followed Maybellene, he amplified the black half of his artistic personality, the brown-eyed handsome man who always came up short in study, his quest for practice the small-time hedonism American promises everyone. By implication, Brown Eyes' sharp sense of life's nettlesome and literature study even oppressive details provided a kind of salvation by humor, especially in Too Much Monkey Business, a catalog of hassles that included work, school and the army. But the white teenagers who were the only audience with the cultural experience to respond to Berry's art weren't buying this kind of salvation, not en masse. Past Of Sta630! They wanted something more optimistic and more specific to themselves; of the four singles that followed Maybellene, only Roll Over Beethoven, which introduced Berry's other half, the rock 'n' roller, achieved any real success. Chuck got the message. Study! His next release, School Day, was another complaint song, but this time the complaints were explicitly adolescent and essays bearing were relieved by the direct action of the rock 'n' roller. In fact, the literature song has been construed as a prophecy of the Free Speech Movement: Close your books, get out of your seat/Down the halls and into the street.

It has become a clich to attribute the rise of past term papers of sta630, rock and roll to a new parallelism between white teenagers and black Americans; a common alienation and study even suffering are often cited. As with most clichs, this one has its basis in about brown of education, fact--teenagers in the Fifties certainly showed an unprecedented consciousness of themselves as a circumscribed group, though how much that had to study do with marketing refinements and how much with the Bomb remains unresolved. In any case, Chuck Berry's history points up the limits of a job in german, this notion. For Berry was closer to study white teenagers both economically (that reform school stint suggests a JD exploit, albeit combined with a racist judicial system) and in spirit (he shares his penchant for youthfulness with Satchel Paige but not Henry Aaron, with Leslie Fiedler but not Norman Podhoretz) than the average black man. And even at that, he had to make a conscious (not to say calculated) leap of the essays imagination to reach them, and sometimes fell short. Although he scored lots of minor hits, Chuck Berry made only three additional Billboard Top Ten singles in the Fifties--Rock and Roll Music, Sweet Little Sixteen, and Johnny B. Goode--and every one of study, them ignored Brown Eyes for the assertive, optimistic, and somewhat simpleminded rock 'n' roller.

In a pattern common among popular artists, his truest and most personal work didn't flop, but it wasn't overwhelmingly popular either. For such artists, the audience can be like a drug. A little of health essays, it is so good for them that they assume a lot of it would be even better, but instead the big dose saps their autonomy, often so subtly that they don't notice it. Literature! For Chuck Berry, the craving for overwhelming popularity proved slightly dangerous. At the same time that he was enlivening his best songs with faintly Latin rhythms, which he was convinced were the coming thing, he was also writing silly exercises with titles like Hey Pedro. Nevertheless, his pursuit of the market also worked a communion with his audience, with whom he continued to have an instinctive rapport remarkable in a 30-year-old black man. For there is also a sense in clinical practice, which the popular artist is a drug for the audience, and a doctor, too--he has to know how much of his vital essence he can administer at one time, and in what compound. The reason Berry's rock 'n' roller was capable of such insightful excursions into the teen psyche--Sweet Little Sixteen, a celebration of everything lovely about fanhood; or Almost Grown, a basically unalianated first-person expression of teen rebellion that Sixties youth-cult pundits should have taken seriously--was that he shared a crucial American value with the humorous Brown Eyes. That value was fun. Literature Study! Even among rock critics, who ought to essays bearing know better, fun doesn't have much of a rep, so that they commiserate with someone like LaVern Baker, a second-rate blues and gospel singer who felt she was selling her soul every time she launched into a first-rate whoop of nonsense like Jim Dandy or Bumble Bee. But fun was what adolescent revolt had to be about--inebriated affluence versus the literature hangover of the work ethic.

It was the only practicable value in essay in english on various, the Peter Pan utopia of the American dream. Because black music had always thrived on exuberance--not just the otherworldly transport of gospel, but the candidly physical good times of literature, great pop blues singers like Washboard Sam, who is health essays, most often dismissed as a lightweight by literature the heavy blues critics--it turned into the perfect vehicle for generational convulsion. Black musicians, however, had rarely achieved an optimism that was cultural as well as personal--those few who did, like Louis Armstrong, left themselves open to charges of essays, Tomming. Study! Chuck Berry never Tommed. Past Of Sta630! The trouble he'd seen just made his sly, bad-boy voice and literature study the splits and essay topics waddles of his stage show that much more credible.

Then, late in 1959, fun turned into trouble. Berry had imported a Spanish-speaking Apache prostitute he'd picked up in literature study, El Paso to check hats in his St. Louis nightclub, and then fired her. She went to the police, and Berry was indicted under the Mann Act. After two trials, the writing in german first so blatantly racist that it was disallowed, he went to literature prison for two years.

When he got out, in in english on various, 1964, he and his wife had separated, apparently a major tragedy for him. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones had paid him such explicit and appropriate tribute that his career was probably in literature study, better shape after his jail term than before, but he couldn't capitalize. He had a few hits--Nadine and essays on military No Particular Place to Go (John Lennon is one of the many who believe they were written before he went in)--but the well was dry. Between 1965 and 1970 he didn't release one-even passable new song, and he died as a recording artist. In late 1966, Berry left Chess for a big advance from Mercury Records.

The legends of his money woes at Chess are numerous, but apparently the Chess brothers knew how to record him--the stuff he produced himself for Mercury was terrible. Working alone with pickup bands, he still performed a great deal, mostly to make money for literature Berry Park, a recreation haven 30 miles from nursing practice, St. Louis. And as he toured, he found that something had happened to his old audience--it was getting older, with troubles of its own, and it dug blues. At auditoriums like the Fillmore, where he did a disappointing live LP with the Steve Miller Blues Band, Chuck was more than willing to stretch out on a blues.

One of his favorites was from Elmore James: When things go wrong, wrong with you, it hurts me too. By 1970, he was back home at Chess, and literature suddenly his new audience called forth a miracle. Berry was a natural head--no drugs, no alcohol--and most of health essays, his attempts to cash in on hippie talk had been embarrassments. Study! But Tulane, one of his greatest story songs, was the perfect fantasy. It was about two dope dealers: Tulane and practice Johnny opened a novelty shop/ Back under the counter was the literature cream of the practice crop. Johnny is nabbed by narcs, but Tulane, his girlfriend, escapes, and study Johnny confidently predicts that she will buy off the essay questions judge. Literature! Apparently she does, for there is a sequel, a blues. In Have Mercy Judge, Johnny has been caught again, and this time he expects to be sent to some stony mansion. Berry devotes the last stanza to Tulane, who is too alive to essay in english on various topics live alone. The last line makes me wonder just how he felt about his own wife when he went to prison: Just tell her to study live, and I'll forgive her, and even love her more when I come back home. Taken together, the two songs are Berry's peak, although Leonard Chess would no doubt have vetoed the vocal double-track on essay in english on various, Tulane that blurs its impact a bit.

Remarkably, Have Mercy Judge is the first important blues Berry ever wrote, and literature like all his best work it isn't quite traditional, utilizing an abc line structure instead of the usual aab . Essays On Military Bearing! Where did it come from? Is it unreasonable to suspect that part of Berry really was a bluesman all along, and that this time, instead of him going to literature study his audience, his audience came to him and on various topics provided the juice for one last masterpiece? Berry's career would appear closed. He is a rock and roll monument at 50, a pleasing performer whose days of inspiration are over. Study! Sometime in health essays, the next 30 years he will probably die, and while his songs have already stuck in the public memory a lot longer than Washboard Sam's, it's likely that most of them will fade away too. So is he, was he, will he be a great artist?

It won't be we judging, but perhaps we can think of it this way. Maybe the true measure of his greatness was not whether his songs lasted--a term which as of now means persisted through centuries instead of decades--but that he was one of the study ones to nursing make us understand that the greatest thing about art is the way it happens between people.
